When I say the words Galaga‚ Space Invaders‚ Mule‚ Elite‚ Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man to name a few‚ a lot of people will realise I am taking Retro Gaming again here but I wanted to add a mental health aspect to this piece.
I am going to base this my own personal views etc.
Why is Retro gaming growing and why is there a link to Mental Health? Well‚ there are so many reasons‚ but for me personally there is something undeniably charming about booting up the likes of emulation station software (RetroPie) on my Raspberry Pi and then loading the likes of the Lion King on original Mega Drive via its emulator and then spending a few hours completing it.
Retropie & Mini Consoles
I have talked about retropie in the past and its still exploding even in 2018 with more and more SBC’s on the market like the XUDroid‚ Asus Tinkerboard to name just a few and all of these are starting to get retropie builds for them so more and then there is the likes of mini consoles and so more and more people even those who did not play them in there early days are now experiencing the fun of these games and its likely more consoles like this both official and bootleg clones will continue to appear now as Retro Gaming is becoming a growth area.

So where is the mental health link?
Well‚ I am probably not alone in this and that is when I am frustrated the first thing I want to do is usually destroyed something and any residual anxiety usually goes up alongside it both are not good well‚ that’s not all the first part of that can land you in serious trouble if you tried it for real but I can destroy things on the virtual world by playing games like Crash Bandicoot or the likes of The Simpsons games.
Not only‚ I am controlling that frustration in a controlled and safe manner when I am playing those sorts of games‚ I am also reducing my own anxiety as I am not focusing or worrying about it in the process of my virtual destruction and by the time‚ I have had enough I have no longer got that frustration I started with and also feel calmer afterwards.
Of course the above is not a 1 stop solution‚ there is times where even I have to admit it’s completely ineffective and that’s just a thing that happens with any technique for mental health it’s got to have enough force or impact so you stop worrying about what you were worrying about in the first place.
