The Catz game line is pretty laid back compared to the likes of Virtual Towers Online or Swat. My friend Hannah has been really excited about this one as she played these games when she was a child.
This title was designed for Windows 95 but it will work on any Windows 9X build. It will not work on windows 10 as that does not support 32bit applications. My PC is 64 bit so I am going to use Vmware Windows 9X emulation
It’s getting harder to track this title down a search on eBay both found nothing. And searching Catz II brought up links for Ubisoft Petz instead, which is actually not that much of a surprise.
P.F magic was bought out by Mindscape in mid 1998 who’s parent is Ubisoft.
This title is available from some vintage windows content sites and archive sites.
Setup & Gameplay
As I mentioned earlier I needed VMware well lets get to it.
Catz II has a simple 90’s style installer & Auto Boot commonly found on Win9x applications. I am not going to go through the installer as its pretty basic stuff.
I remember when I first played this back around 1998 I was blown away with it. Cute and I loved how I could have a virtual cat running around on the desktop. And like the other game Dogz II you could have your pet(z) as a screen saver.
That was cool back in those days when making screensavers were was fun.
Not Much to do
On a gameplay level its pretty simplistic, but is it a bad thing well no. This was a pretty successful title the gameplay pretty much consists of what you see in the screenshots above.
Despite the lack of things to do it’s a very smooth game with the mouse even now. The Logitech MX mouse I have had no issues with it.
Graphics & Animation
The graphics are sadly starting to show their age. It’s is evident to see the age in the design of the cats and how they appear in Catz II. No shaders, indirect lighting or AA. Had this been released in this era then you probably see cats like the ones seen in 3D rendering software.
Animation wise, Catz II is still quite good it’s not the best. Animations of the cat hunting or the cat drinking from the milk bottle to name a few still feel strong. It’s holding in there on that alone if anything now.
It’s been a bit of an awkward one really because the gameplay of this is so basic. With that it is hard to cover certain parts of this game. The likes of Swat 4 and virtual Towers online are pretty easy to cover.
There is so much to talk about in those types of game Catz sadly is not one of those games.
